HYPERSPACE project achieves first milestones 

On the path to creating an intercontinental network for quantum key communication, the HyperSpace project consortium has reached significant milestones since the project’s launch in October 2022.

With this, the consortium has successfully completed the first half of the project. The published research results highlight new developments and implementation options for quantum key distribution (QKD), which will now be tested in the field.

The HyperSpace project, coordinated at Fraunhofer IOF, aims to advance the vision of a global network for virtually tap-proof quantumcommunication. It is funded by the European Commission and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

HYPERSPACE researchers meet at Photonics North

The team around the research project HYPERSPACE met this year at Photonics North, the most important photonics conference in Canada. The aim of HYPERSPACE is to create the basis for an intercontinental network for quantumcommunication.

The team was able to present the first developments at the international conference, with presentations by Dr. Fabian Steinlechner (Fraunhofer IOF), Daniele Bajoni (Università di Pavia), the research group of Prof. Thomas Jennewein (University of Waterloo) and the group of Prof. Roberto Morandotti (INRS, Institut national de la recherche scientifique).

„Quantum technology from fundamental science to real world applications“

The school aims at forming PhD students by offering them a broad overview from fundamental physics to out-of-the-lab applications. Well-recognized researchers from solid-state, quantum information to atomic physics will provide the fundamental science aspects, while entrepreneurs and scientists in research and development will discuss the industrial opportunities of quantum technologies. The training will give the PhD students a unique view on state-of-the-art quantum experiments and their applications, together with industrial outlooks, with a particular focus on photon-based qubits.
